As a tongan youth worker in australia, my cultural background allows me to connect with people from diverse ethnicities and collaborate effectively with Indigenous communities. The Tongan values of culture and community are key to building positive relationships and understanding within diverse backgrounds. My unique perspective helps promote diversity and inclusivity, aligning with the shared emphasis on community and family.

Initially, becoming a youth worker wasn’t my plan straight out of high school. however, through various experiences, i discovered my passion for building meaningful relationships with students. with 6 years of experience, i specialise in working with young people exhibiting physical and verbal challenges. my strengths lie in creating programs that enhance students’ social-emotional learning and classroom engagement. i also support students with diverse needs, including those with disabilities, behavioural challenges and trauma backgrounds.

I’ve had the privilege of pursuing my passion for sports as a professional athlete with the brumbies and in Japan’s top league. this experience has instilled in me a deep sense of discipline, teamwork and perseverance which I now bring to my work. I understand the critical roles of goal setting, mentorship and creating a supportive environment for personal growth. by blending my professional sporting background with my commitment to youth work, I aim to inspire and motivate young people to chase their dreams and overcome challenges.

Seizing opportunities, creating futures

Make the Time supports young people who might be struggling to engage in school transitions, work and finding their way through the youth justice system. throughout our sessions, we focus on building positive behaviour and fostering positive relationships with adults. by letting young people know that the adults around them at school are safe and here to help, we can hopefully cultivate future relationships within the school community. make the time adopts an extensive approach to support a positive self-image, boost self-esteem, and enhance confidence among young individuals who encounter various challenges. this is achieved through a combination of physical activities, supportive programs, community engagement, and pro social behaviour.

we understand that these students simply need an opportunity to gain an entry point into the working world. that’s why we’ve established strong connections with various companies, enabling students to gain valuable work experience. some of these opportunities are paid work experience. whether it’s carpentry, landscaping, electrical work, plumbing, or even sign writing, make the time is here to nurture these connections, helping young adults bridge the gap to the professional world.

Each session with make the time will look different depending on each students needs. we understand that every young person is unique, so we tailor our sessions accordingly. we provide transportation for pick-ups and drop-offs from home or school, though we primarily focus on school pick-ups and drop-offs to promote re-engagement in the educational setting. we are grateful to have wonderful sponsors that we use to strive to ensure that our clients have a great time with us by prioritising fun and enjoyment. while engaging in conversations, we focus on fostering positive relationships, setting goals, promoting self-regulation, and understanding the consequences of one’s actions. these efforts aim to instil positive relationships between young individuals and adults. before each session weather it would be a group session or a mentoring session we will keep you updated on what we would like to achieve, furthermore we would also steer the conversations to topics you feel might have more relevance. if there is an outcome we wish to achieve and we don’t achieve it throughout the session we will highlight it and establish it the next time we meet while also keeping you updated on where make the time is at.
